Roman Archaeology

This section traces the history of the territory of Carrara and its quarries in the display of Roman artefacts. After exploring the Apuan region through antique maps regione apuana, riesplorata attraverso le fotografie aeree e le vecchie carte and photographs, the section presents a comprehensive image of the different aspects of marble quuarrying in antiquity.

A model recosnstructs the process of the working of blocks; antique iron tools found in the quarries - picks and hammers very similar to those still used in the nineteenth century are also displayed; samples of marble used by the Romans are shown alongside examples of tagliata (cuts made into the rock-face). The section also presents religious life in the quarries, displaying the statue of the Goddess Luna and fragments of other votive statues.
